How to Maintain a Clear Complexion During the Cold Weather

Biting winds, central heating and a poor diet can all lead to problems with our skin throughout the cooler months. To keep your complexion clear this winter, it’s worth paying close attention to combat greasy outbreaks and dry patches and trying some herbal remedies for a clear complexion.

It’s natural for the condition of your skin to change throughout the year depending on a whole range of factors, ranging from what you eat or how you feel, as well as external environmental considerations like the weather. In the winter, cold weather and harsh conditions can leave our complexions looking dry and dull and feeling tight.

A balanced diet, combined with a good skincare routine and a licensed herbal remedy, can help to relieve the symptoms of a dull, dry complexion this winter.

Here are our top four tips to help maintain a clear complexion right through the winter months:

 1.    Eat Well

Although it may be tempting to binge on carb-heavy comfort foods as the mercury plummets, you still need to include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet.  The quality of your diet shows in your complexion, so it’s worth loading up on fresh fruit and veg to keep your skin glowing through the winter months.

Some foods are well-known for their complexion-boosting properties. Citrus fruits including oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes, contain high levels of ascorbic acid – better known as vitamin C – which is essential to help maintain a clear complexion.  Vitamin C helps your body’s collagen formation, which helps keeps wrinkles at bay.

Mango and other yellow and orange fruits, such as papaya and cantaloupe, are good sources of provitamin A – also known as Beta Carotene. This helps to protect your immune system and promotes healthy growth and development of the skin.

Vegetables are also essential to ensuring your skin gets the nutrients it needs. In-season green veggies like kale, cabbage and broccoli contain a wide range of antioxidants which can help to rid your body of toxins that can contribute to a sallow, or dull looking complexion.

  2.    Sleep Well

Early nights can become much more tempting as the nights draw in.  Snuggling up early is easy, but making sure you get good quality sleep all night long can be more of a challenge.

Episodes of seasonal low mood or anxiety can disturb your sleep, making you look and feel tired.  You may have trouble drifting off, or you may wake early for no reason.

Even mild sleep deprivation can affect how you feel, causing poor concentration, a short temper and those pesky bags under your eyes. Making sure you get a sufficient quantity of high-quality sleep is essential to looking and feeling your best.

3.    Drink Plenty of water

Water is an essential ingredient for a healthy lifestyle and helps to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy. Making sure you drink enough water every day flushes out toxins in your body encouraging your complexion to glow. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty – keep sipping water right through the day to keep your skin hydrated.

4.    Choose the Right Herbal Medicines to Help Your Skin

Rather than relying on topical creams or lotions, why not consider a herbal medicine in tablet form that contains natural ingredients that have traditionally been used to treat skin problems from within all year round. You should always make sure you choose a herbal medicine that is licensed and which contains herbs specifically designed to improve your skin, such as blue flag and burdock root.

Blue flag is a powerful antioxidant that helps to alleviate toxins from the skin, as well as being used to help relieve the symptoms of a variety of conditions and ailments.

Burdock Root has anti-bacterial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties that offer a natural remedy for assorted skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and dry skin.

HRI Clear Complexion contains extracts of Blue Flag and Burdock Root to help control minor skin conditions such as spots, pimples, blemishes, mild acne and even mild eczema.

Look after your skin this winter and you can look forward to having a healthy, glowing complexion all year round.
