How To Stay Safe in the Sun with Spot-Prone Skin
The spring and summer weather brings gorgeous sunshine which is great for boosting your mood and vitamin D levels. But, if you suffer from spots and blemishes, the bright, warm weather may make you feel more anxious and uncomfortable than anything else!
When you have sore, red skin caused by spots and acne, the heat can aggravate your inflamed and spotty skin. The last thing you feel like doing is applying thick sunscreens to your skin!
But, everyone needs to protect their skin from the sun’s harmful rays that can burn sensitive skin and potentially even cause skin cancer and premature signs of ageing.

Keep it shady
Stay cool and out of direct sun by taking to the shade wherever you can. If you’re out and about, keep yourself in the shade at all times by wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Sunglasses are great for protecting your eyes and the delicate skin around your eyes too (and look very Hollywood!) If you’re picnicking outside, sitting under a parasol or under a shady tree is a great idea.
Wear natural fabrics
Covering up on the sun is important for everyone. Wearing clothes made from natural fabrics such as cotton and linen, that wick sweat away from the skin, are the best option for staying cool and minimising the chance for bacteria to breed on your skin. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon aren’t breathable and keep sweat against your skin, making an outbreak of spots more likely.
Choose a non-comedogenic sunscreen
Slathering on thick, heavy sunscreen is the last thing you want to do when you have sore skin and spots, but, foregoing sunscreen isn’t an option. Choose a sunscreen at least factor 30 and labelled ‘non-comedogenic’ as this means it won’t block your pores or cause spots.
Apply sunscreen regularly
Unfortunately, you can’t just put load of sunscreen on in the morning and be good for the day. Suntan lotions or creams need regular re-application, at least every two hours, more if you exercise or take a dip in the pool. Make sure you re-apply your sunscreen with clean hands so that you don’t introduce bacteria to your skin and increase the risk of spots and blackheads
Keep your make-up super light
Heavy make-up and the heat aren’t a great combination and it can block your pores and make spots and blemishes worse. Reapplying sunscreen throughout the day is much easier if you don’t have to wash off and reapply your make-up too. Keep your make-up as light as possible and consider swapping out a look that’s heavy on the foundation and blusher, for a bold lip or smouldering eyes!
Be mindful of summer sweet treats
Ice cream and lollipops are summer staples but an increase in sugar intake can have a knock-on effect for your skin. A balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veggies is important for keeping skin healthy and balanced. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water too!
